Thirsk
Thirsk
Located 11.5 miles away from Osprey Meadow is another historic market town, famous for its racecourse, 15th Century Church, and Thomas Lord. Thirsk is the “Darrowby” of the late James Herriot (Alf Wright), famous vet and author, and is the heart of “Herriot Country”.
There is a Tourist Information Centre in the Town (YO7 1EY) with lots of leaflets and events information.
Thirsk has weekly market days on a Monday and Saturday, including bank holidays. There is a farmers’ market on the first Sunday of each month.
The World of James Herriot (YO7 1PL) is the actual Skeldale House which explores veterinary science and takes visitors on a journey back to the 1940s. It’s a unique tribute to Alf Wright and is the only centre of its kind in the UK dedicated to Veterinary science.
There are a variety of local shops, bars, restaurants, together with a museum and gallery.
There are EV charging points (fast) in Millgate car park (YO7 1AA) and next to the Tourist Information Centre (slow).
Car parking is free in the marketplace for up to 1 hour (press the green button for your free ticket) (YO7 1EY).
Disk Zone parking is available at Kirkgate (YO7 1PL) for 2 hours free. Discs can be collected readily in local shops and the Tourist information Centre.
